Combating Corruption in Serbia
Johnson Law Group International PLLC

Dates:

04/2011

to

6/2012

Program Goal/Need

More than 50 percent of Serbian businesses report that they expect to pay bribes in order to conduct business in the country, and they cite corruption as the principle obstacle to running a company. Moreover,  some 90 percent of Serbian people see corruption as a major impediment  to reform in the country. The purpose of this ongoing program is to bring the issue of corruption to the table for discussion among the contending political parties during the ramp-up to national elections in 2012.

Program Description

Working with political leaders and other stakeholders, Johnson Law  Group helped to frame the problem of corruption in Serbia and how it affects that country's political, economic and social development. We provided examples of how other countries, both in the region and elsewhere, have adopted specific strategies to combat both petty and grand corruption.

Program Results

We helped to organize and participate in a highly visible national conference on corruption, attended by political leaders, civil society, media, donors and others. Program results included the development of a platform that included a focus on anti-corruption on the part of one of Serbia's leading political parties--one that previously had not clearly been associated with governance reform of this sort.
